Now that you are home after your AdVance male sling surgery, I would like to give you some information that will help your recovery go more smoothly.

• If you were sent home with a catheter in your bladder, our office will be contacting you to have that removed between two to four days from the time you went home.
• If you were sent home without a catheter, you may experience some frequent urination, but if you feel that you are not emptying your bladder completely or if you have any bleeding, you should contact our office for further instructions.
• For the next week, you should take it easy around the house. After a week, if you are not experiencing any problems, you may begin to drive and do activities of normal daily living. However, you should not do any heavy lifting, exercise or have intercourse for six weeks.
• It is normal to have some black and blue develop around the scrotal area and on your upper thighs. It is also normal to have some scrotal and penile swelling. If you feel you have an abnormal amount of bleeding or swelling, you should contact our office.
• You were probably given antibiotics and pain pills when you went home. You should take the antibiotics until they are gone and take the pain pills as necessary.
• Constipation may be an issue for you because of the pain medications. You should take Milk of Magnesia or a stool softener of your choice so that you do not have to strain to have a bowel movement for the first six weeks after the procedure. Straining to have a bowel movement may loosen the sling and may affect the eventual outcome of your procedure.
• Our office will be contacting you to come in approximately two or three weeks after your surgery. At that time, we will check your urine for infection and make sure you are emptying your bladder. If you have any problems before then, please do not hesitate to contact our office.
