POST-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS:
AFTER A PENILE PROSTHESIS
Hopefully, your recovery after your recent penile prosthesis surgery is going well. I would like to give you some information that will help your recovery go more smoothly.
- You were probably given an antibiotic and some pain pills. You should take the antibiotics until they are gone and the pain pills as necessary.
- For the first week or so while you are at home, using an ice pack and keeping your feet up will be beneficial. It will keep both the swelling and pain to a minimum.
- It is normal and expected for you to have some black and blue discoloration of your scrotum and penis.
- It is also normal and expected that you will have some swelling involving the scrotum and penis. You may swell to two or three times your normal size.
- You can shower daily, however, the dressings that were placed should stay on for a period of ten days to two weeks, if possible.
- You should not have any difficulty voiding. If you do, please contact our office for further instructions.
- After the first week, you should be able to resume normal daily activities; however, you should avoid any strenuous physical activity or intercourse until instructed to return to these activities.
- Our office will call you to come in and see us two weeks after your surgery to get your staples removed and to check the progress of your healing.
- Usually, it will take six weeks for all of the swelling to resolve and, at that time, we will instruct you on how to operate your new device.
- Your pain and swelling should decrease daily after the first several days. If, after the first week, you have increasing pain or swelling, you should contact our office for further instructions.
I hope you are doing well. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our office 810.232.8888.
Sincerely,
Michael J. Macksood, D.O., F.A.C.S.
