POST-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS:
AFTER TRANSURETHRAL RESECTION OF THE PROSTATE

Hopefully, your recovery after your transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is going well. I would like to give you some information that will help your recovery go more smoothly.

  • You were probably sent home from the hospital with a catheter in your bladder hooked to a bag on your leg. This catheter usually stays for a period of two to four days.
  • It is normal and expected to have some light pink to red urine from time to time. If you develop heavy clots or the catheter stops draining properly, you should contact our office for further advice.
  • While the catheter is in, you should stay close to home. You can shower and wash the catheter when you shower daily.
  • You were probably given some pain pills and antibiotic pills. You should take the antibiotic pills until they are gone and the pain pills as necessary.
  • If you are taking any aspirin or blood thinners at home, you should not take these for a period of at least two weeks. These medications will increase your chance of bleeding.
  • Our office should be contacting you about getting the catheter removed in our office. After the catheter comes out, you should limit your activities around the house for a week or two.
  • After two weeks, if you are having no problems or bleeding, you can begin driving and doing normal daily activities. You should avoid heavy physical activity, exercise or intercourse for four to six weeks after the procedure.
  • Our office will be making an appointment for you to come in and see me about two to three weeks after your surgery. At that time, we will check to make sure your bladder is emptying properly and we will review your pathology report.

I hope you are doing well. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our office 810.232.8888.

Sincerely,

Michael J. Macksood, D.O., F.A.C.S.
