POST-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS:
AFTER A VASECTOMY
Hopefully, your recovery after your vasectomy is going smoothly. These instructions will help you have a smooth post-operative course.
- As you were told at the time of your vasectomy, the day of the procedure is the most important time. We want you to go home immediately from our office and stay off your feet with an ice pack on your scrotum.
- The day following the procedure, you can shower. You can take off your bandage and wash your incision with soap and water. You should keep it covered with a band aide and keep it clean and dry.
- The sutures in the scrotum are catgut and they will dissolve in a period of ten days to two weeks.
- It is normal to have some scrotal swelling even to twice your normal size and it is also normal to have black and blue discoloration of the scrotum and penis.
- You should where a jock strap for the first week when you are up walking around and working, as this will support the testicles and help with discomfort.
- You were given some pain pills, which you should take as necessary for discomfort and you should take the antibiotic pills you were given until they are gone.
- We would like to see you in the office in approximately one week to check your incision and make sure you are having no complications.
- It is very important to remember to get your semen samples done at six weeks and eight weeks after the procedure and we need to have two negative samples in a row before we can tell you it is safe to stop birth control and rely on the vasectomy. All of the paperwork for this should have been given to you in the office.
If you are having any problems or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our office at 810.232.8888.
Sincerely,
Michael J. Macksood, D.O., F.A.C.S.
